Chronicle Books is an independent publisher based in San Francisco that has been making things since the late sixties. With Chronicle, we’ve had the opportunity to work on books about institutions underlying our shared cultural fabric.

The Devil’s Acre

The title "Devil’s Acre" comes from the name of a little island bordered by three streets, a triangular burg that was once the wickedest, wildest single block in the whole of the world and the backbone of the Barbary Coast of San Francisco. We constructed an aesthetic from old book titles and sheet music, historic photos, and dark, moody drink photography.
